Why Gulangyu is special
Just a short ferry from downtown Xiamen, Gulangyu was an international settlement from the 1840s, and thirteen countries built consulates, churches, villas and gardens here. In 2017 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list as "Kulangsu, a Historic International Settlement." The whole island is car-free, so you explore on foot through shady lanes, past pianos drifting from open windows — it is nicknamed "Piano Island."

Sunlight Rock & Shuzhuang Garden
The island high point for sea views, and a seaside garden with the Piano Museum.
Longtou Road
The main street for local snacks — try the pie, seafood and fresh juices.
Quiet corners & beaches
Away from the main lanes, the island's back streets and small beaches are calm and photogenic.
Practical tips
- Ferry routes, tickets and departure arrangements are confirmed through the official operator before travel.
- No cars or bikes on the island; wear comfortable shoes.
- Allow at least half a day; a full day if you love architecture and slow wandering.
- A private guide makes the history come alive and skips the queues where possible.
