Ships dock at the International Cruise Center on Xiamen Island. The Gulangyu tourist ferry leaves from the same complex, so with a ticket arranged in advance you can be on the island within an hour of getting off the ship. Give the morning to Gulangyu and the afternoon to Nanputuo Temple and the old harbour, or choose one and do it slowly.
Where you dock
The Xiamen International Cruise Center is on Donggang Road in Huli District, on the western shore of the island. It is a working home port, so on turnaround days it is busy with embarking passengers. Distances from the terminal are short:
| To | Distance | By car |
|---|---|---|
| Gulangyu tourist ferry (Dongdu / Xiagu) | Same complex | On foot |
| Zhongshan Road and the old town | About 4–5 km | About 15 minutes |
| Nanputuo Temple and Xiamen University | South-west of the island | About 20–25 minutes |
| Gaoqi airport | About 11 km | 15–20 minutes |
| Xiamen North railway station | About 24 km | 35–45 minutes |
Metro Line 2 stops at Cruise Center station, and ride-hailing cars pick up outside.
Getting ashore without a visa
China has a rule made for cruise passengers. Since 15 May 2024, foreign tour groups of at least two people who arrive by cruise ship can enter without a visa at 13 ports, Xiamen among them, and stay up to 15 days within the coastal provinces and Beijing. There are two conditions that matter. The group has to be organised or received by a travel agency registered in China, and it has to leave on the same ship.
In practice this means the visa-free route runs through an agency: either the ship's own shore-excursion partner or a local operator you book yourself. If you would rather walk off alone, you need your own basis for entry. Passport holders on the 30-day visa-free list can do that. Xiamen's passenger seaports are also eligible ports for the 240-hour transit policy, though that requires an onward ticket to a third country or region and suits few cruise itineraries. Ask the cruise line what it will accept before you sail. The ship controls the gangway.
The obvious choice: Gulangyu
Gulangyu is the small, car-free island of villas and consulates that UNESCO listed in 2017, and it is the main reason ships call here. The tourist ferry leaves from the same Cruise Center complex and takes about 20 minutes.
The snag is the ticket, and on a ship day it is a real one. Sailings are real-name and tied to a passport, the official booking app often will not take a foreign passport, and morning boats sell out on busy days. A thousand passengers walking over to the counter at 8:30 will not all get on the 9:00. Arrange tickets before the ship arrives. Our ferry guide explains the options.
Once across, three to four hours covers the essentials: the old consulate quarter by the pier, Shuzhuang Garden and its Piano Museum, a walk through the lanes, and lunch. Skip Sunlight Rock if the queue is long. The return fare is included, and boats run back all afternoon.
The alternative: the main island
If you have been to Gulangyu before, or the ferries are not running, the city itself fills a day comfortably.
- Nanputuo Temple. A working Buddhist temple against a wooded hill. Free with a reservation.
- Shapowei. The old typhoon shelter, with fishing boats moored under two glass towers.
- The Huandao Road boardwalk. A level seaside walk past Hulishan Fortress.
- Zhongshan Road and the Eighth Market. Arcaded shop-houses and Xiamen's street food, on the way back to the ship.
All four are within 25 minutes of the terminal and of each other.
A realistic day with eight hours in port
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 08:30 | Ashore, walk to the Dongdu ferry hall |
| 09:00 | Ferry to Sanqiutian pier |
| 09:30–12:30 | Gulangyu: consulate quarter, Shuzhuang Garden, lanes |
| 12:30 | Ferry back; lunch near Zhongshan Road |
| 14:00–15:30 | Nanputuo Temple and Shapowei by car |
| 15:30 | Drive back to the Cruise Center |
| 16:00 | At the terminal, with an hour in hand |
Shift everything to fit your ship's all-aboard time, and keep that last hour. The road from the south of the island crosses the busiest part of town.
What not to try
The Fujian Tulou are the other famous sight in the region and they are too far. It is two to three hours by road each way. A ship in port for nine hours would give you perhaps two hours at the earth buildings and no margin at all. If the Tulou matter to you, come back by land, or choose an itinerary that starts or ends in Xiamen and add days.
Be wary, too, of anyone at the terminal gates offering a cheap island tour. The complaints visitors post about Gulangyu nearly all start that way, and end in a pearl shop.
Starting or ending your cruise here
If Xiamen is your embarkation port, arrive at least a day early. Flights and trains into the city are disrupted several times each summer by typhoons, and the ship will not wait. Two days before sailing is enough for Gulangyu and the city, and four would let you add the Tulou. Our guide to how many days to spend in Xiamen sets out the options, and airport to city covers the transfer.
Weather and cancelled calls
Typhoon season runs from July to September. A storm in the strait can close the port, and when that happens the ferry to Gulangyu will have stopped before the ship changes course. In spring, fog sometimes holds the island ferries for a few hours in the morning while the city stays open. On those days the main-island plan above is your fallback.
Quick answers
Where do cruise ships dock in Xiamen?
At the Xiamen International Cruise Center on Donggang Road, on the west side of Xiamen Island facing Gulangyu and Haicang.
Do cruise passengers need a visa for Xiamen?
Foreign tour groups of two or more arriving by cruise and received by a travel agency registered in China can enter visa-free for up to 15 days at 13 ports including Xiamen, and must leave on the same ship. Independent passengers need to qualify another way, such as the 30-day visa-free list or a visa.
How far is the Xiamen cruise terminal from Gulangyu?
The daytime tourist ferry to Gulangyu departs from the same Cruise Center complex. The crossing takes about 20 minutes.
How far is the cruise port from the city centre?
About 4 to 5 km from Zhongshan Road, roughly 15 minutes by car. Metro Line 2 has a Cruise Center station.
Is one day enough for Xiamen from a cruise?
It is enough for either Gulangyu or the main-island highlights. With eight hours or more in port and an early start you can do a short version of both.
Can I go to the Fujian Tulou from a cruise stop?
Not sensibly. The Tulou are two to three hours each way by road, which leaves almost no time there and a real risk of missing the ship.

Docking in Xiamen for the day?
Tell us your ship, date and time in port. A licensed agency can receive your group, which is what the visa-free cruise rule requires, and plan the day around your all-aboard time.
