Under five hours, stay in the terminal. With five to seven, take the metro to Jimei for the waterfront and a bowl of shacha noodles. With eight to ten, go into the old town for Nanputuo Temple, Shapowei and the seafront. Gulangyu only works on the longest stops.
Can you leave the airport at all?
That depends on your passport, not on the airport. There are three common cases.
- Your nationality is on China's 30-day visa-free list. You simply enter.
- You are flying on to a third country or region and hold one of the 57 passports eligible for 240-hour visa-free transit. Gaoqi is an eligible port. You need the confirmed onward ticket in hand.
- Neither applies, and you have no visa. Then you stay airside.
Ask your airline at check-in whether your bags are tagged through. If they are, you walk out with hand luggage. If you are on two separate tickets you will need to collect and re-check them, which eats an hour.
Do the sums honestly
A layover is shorter than it looks on the booking. Take the gap between scheduled landing and take-off and subtract:
- 45 to 60 minutes to get off the plane, through immigration and out of the terminal
- 3 hours before an international departure, when check-in opens at Gaoqi, or 2 hours before a domestic one
- 30 minutes each way to wherever you are going
A seven-hour connection therefore leaves about two hours on the ground in town. That is enough for one thing, done without hurry.
Drop your bag
There is a left-luggage counter on the arrivals level of Terminal 3, close to door 7, next to the convenience store. People who used it in 2025 paid around ¥10 for a small bag for up to ten hours. Even with checked luggage tagged through, leaving your backpack there makes the afternoon easier.
Five to seven hours: Jimei
This is the plan travellers on short stops keep recommending to each other, and it is a good one. Jimei is the old school district across the water, built by the philanthropist Tan Kah Kee in a style that puts Chinese tiled roofs on Western brick buildings.
Take a car to Gaoqi metro station, a few minutes from the terminal, and ride Line 1 north to Jimei School Village. Part of the journey runs on a causeway over open sea. Sit on the right. Door to door it is about half an hour.
From the station, walk to the Dragon Boat Pond, ringed with red-roofed school buildings, then on to Jiageng Park and the seafront at Aoyuan. Eat on Shigu Road. One traveller with six hours rented an electric bike near the station for ¥35 and rode the waterfront instead of walking it. Take a car straight back to departures.
More on the district in our Jimei guide.
Eight to ten hours: the old town
With this much time you can go south into the city proper. A car to the centre takes 20 to 30 minutes and costs about ¥30 to ¥40.
- Nanputuo Temple. Free, with a reservation, and an hour is enough. Ask to be dropped at the east gate.
- Lunch. The temple's vegetarian noodles, or seafood at Shapowei ten minutes away.
- Shapowei. The old fishing harbour under the twin towers, now lined with cafes.
- The seafront. Walk a stretch of the boardwalk from Baicheng beach.
If food matters more to you than temples, swap the first stop for Zhongshan Road and the lanes of the Eighth Market.
Someone who did this on a ten-hour connection in 2025 added a note worth repeating: she found a cafe with sockets and spent an hour charging her phone and doing nothing before heading back. A layover day does not have to be full.
What about Gulangyu?
It is the sight everyone has heard of, and it is the hardest to fit in. The daytime ferry leaves from Dongdu, 20 minutes from the airport. The crossing is another 20, and tickets for foreign passport holders usually have to be bought or collected at the counter. On a busy day the next sailing with space may be two hours off.
We would only attempt it with eight hours or more between flights, a ticket arranged in advance, and a weekday. Read our ferry guide before deciding. And do not go between January and May without a fallback: morning fog suspends the boats several times each spring.
Three plans side by side
| Time between flights | Plan | Time in town |
|---|---|---|
| Under 5 hours | Stay airside | None |
| 5–7 hours | Jimei by metro | 1.5–2.5 hours |
| 8–10 hours | Nanputuo, Shapowei, seafront | 3.5–5 hours |
| 10 hours or more, weekday | Gulangyu with a pre-booked ferry | 3–4 hours on the island |
Times assume an international onward flight. For a domestic one, add an hour.
Practical points
- Set up Alipay and DiDi before you fly. See getting around Xiamen.
- Keep your passport and onward boarding details on you.
- Avoid the bridges at rush hour. If your return falls between 5 and 7 pm, leave 20 minutes earlier.
- In typhoon season, July to September, check whether your onward flight is still running before you leave the terminal.
Arriving by late 2026 or after
Everything above assumes Gaoqi airport. Xiamen's new Xiang'an airport is due to open around the end of 2026, about 25 km from the centre, and Gaoqi is planned to close to passenger flights when it does. Layover outings will take longer from there. Check which airport your flights use.
Quick answers
Can I leave Xiamen airport during a layover?
If you are allowed to enter China, yes. Travellers from 57 countries can use the 240-hour visa-free transit when flying on to a third country or region, and others enter on a visa or the 30-day visa-free policy. Confirm your own case before you travel.
How long a layover do I need to leave the airport in Xiamen?
Five hours between landing and take-off is the practical minimum for a short outing. With less, stay airside.
Is there luggage storage at Xiamen airport?
Yes, on the Terminal 3 arrivals level near door 7. Travellers reported about ¥10 for a small bag for up to ten hours.
Can I visit Gulangyu on a layover?
Only with eight hours or more and a ferry ticket secured in advance. The ferry, the crossing and the queues take too long for a shorter stop.
How early should I be back at the airport?
International check-in at Gaoqi opens three hours before departure, and you should be back by then. For a domestic flight, two hours.
What is closest to Xiamen airport?
Jimei School Village, about 30 minutes away by metro from Gaoqi station, and the old town around Zhongshan Road, 20 to 30 minutes by car.
