Stay one night, in Taxia or Yunshuiyao on the Nanjing side or Hongkeng on the Yongding side. Choose a renovated guesthouse with its own bathroom unless you actively want the rough version. Confirm in advance that the place can register a foreign passport.
Why stay at all
A day trip from Xiamen means five or six hours on the road and four at the Tulou, all of them between 10 am and 4 pm, which is exactly when everyone else is there. A night changes the arithmetic. You drive out in the morning, see one area in the afternoon, and then have the evening and the first hours of the next day when the villages are quiet. The second day's drive is short.
It is also the only way to see both the Nanjing and Yongding areas without rushing. They are 30 to 45 minutes apart by mountain road, and a guesthouse in between turns two long day trips into one relaxed loop.
Three kinds of room
1. A room in a lived-in tulou
This is the romantic version and the hard one. A family rents out a few of its upper rooms. You climb shared wooden stairs to a small chamber off the gallery, with a bed, a fan or air-conditioner and a window in a metre-thick earth wall. The bathroom is often shared, and in some buildings it is outside the main gate. Travellers' notes say many tulou close their gate in the evening, around eight, and that towels and toiletries are not supplied.
You are sleeping in the real thing, among the family's own rooms, and you wake to the sounds of the courtyard. If that sentence appeals, this is for you. If you need a bathroom in the night, read on.
2. A guesthouse in a converted tulou or village house
The middle option, and the one we would suggest to most people. Part of a tulou, or an old house or former school beside one, has been refitted with en-suite bathrooms, Western toilets, air-conditioning and Wi-Fi. Rooms are simple and clean. You are in the village, a minute from the earth buildings, without sharing a washroom.
The best-documented example is in Hongkeng. Fuyu Lou, a tiered “five phoenix” tulou built in 1880, has had a guesthouse in one wing for many years, run by a descendant of the family that built it, with a mix of private and shared bathrooms and a long record of foreign guests. On the Nanjing side, Taxia has several guesthouses of this kind, one of them in a former school renovated in 2019.
3. A boutique conversion
In the last few years design-led hotels have opened in restored earth buildings, the largest of them spread across five tulou near the Nanjing clusters. These are proper hotels with proper prices, and they suit travellers who want the architecture and a good shower.
Where to stay
| Village | Area | Character | Near |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taxia | Nanjing | Quiet stream-side village, the usual base | Tianluokeng, 15 minutes |
| Yunshuiyao | Nanjing | Riverside path under banyans, more shops | Hegui Lou, Huaiyuan Lou |
| Hekeng | Nanjing | Very few visitors, basic | Hekeng cluster |
| Hongkeng | Yongding | A village of tulou, most choice of rooms | Zhencheng Lou; Gaobei 10 minutes |
| Gaobei | Yongding | Small, beside Chengqi Lou | Chengqi Lou |
What to check before you book
- Can they register a foreign passport? Every lodging in China must register foreign guests with the police. Since July 2024 a national notice has told local authorities and booking platforms not to bar lodgings from taking foreigners on licensing grounds. That is the rule. In practice a small family inn in a mountain village may not have the system installed. Ask directly, in advance, and get a yes in writing.
- Is the bathroom private, and is it inside the building?
- Which floor is the room on, and how are the stairs? Upper rooms are reached by shared wooden staircases.
- Is there heating or air-conditioning? Ask about both for the season you are travelling in.
- Does the gate close at night?
- Is dinner available? Villages go quiet early, and the guesthouse kitchen may be the only one open.
We have not been able to verify current prices. The only dated figures we found are from 2017 and 2018, when basic rooms were around ¥100. Listings in 2026 suggest renovated guesthouses at a few hundred yuan and boutique properties well above that. Get a quote for your dates.
What the evening and morning are like
There is no nightlife and that is the point. After dinner people sit in doorways and drink tea. In summer there are fireflies along the water, according to one operator who sends guests there.
Get up early. Before eight the light comes in low across the terraces, and you can walk into a courtyard and be the only visitor. If you are near Tianluokeng, go to the viewpoint before the first coach.
A two-day plan
| Morning | Afternoon | Night | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Drive from Xiamen; Yunshuiyao | Tianluokeng, Yuchang Lou | Taxia |
| Day 2 | Early walk; cross to Gaobei for Chengqi Lou | Hongkeng: Zhencheng Lou, Kuiju Lou; drive back | Xiamen |
The reverse works too, sleeping in Hongkeng. Our comparison of the Nanjing and Yongding clusters explains what is in each, and this page covers the journey.
Who should not do this
Anyone who needs a lift, a guaranteed quiet night or a hotel-standard bathroom should think about the boutique option or stay in Xiamen and take the day trip. Travellers with limited mobility will find the stairs and uneven ground difficult in the traditional buildings. If you are travelling in winter, pack warm layers and ask about heating.
Quick answers
Can you stay overnight in a tulou?
Yes. Guesthouses operate inside or beside earth buildings in Hongkeng and Gaobei in Yongding, and in Taxia, Yunshuiyao and Hekeng in Nanjing county.
Do tulou rooms have private bathrooms?
Some do. Rooms in unconverted tulou often share a bathroom, sometimes outside the building. Renovated guesthouses and boutique conversions have en-suite bathrooms and air-conditioning.
How much does it cost to stay in a tulou?
We could not confirm current prices. Older published figures for basic rooms were around ¥100, and 2026 listings suggest a few hundred yuan for renovated guesthouses and more for boutique properties. Ask for a current quote.
Can foreigners stay in tulou guesthouses?
National rules say lodgings must not refuse foreign guests on licensing grounds, but small family inns do not all have the registration system set up. Confirm with the specific guesthouse before you book.
Which village is best for an overnight stay?
Taxia for the Nanjing side: quiet, by a stream, 15 minutes from Tianluokeng. Hongkeng for the Yongding side, where part of Fuyu Lou has long operated as an inn.
Is one night enough?
Yes. One night gives you an evening and an early morning in the village and splits the drive from Xiamen into two easy halves.
